Coin collecting is a popular hobby. Coins may be an investment that offers the opportunity for income, or they may be a way to understand history and how major events impact day to day life. Valuing collectible coins takes a number of factors into consideration and is best handled by an experienced collector or professional. A beginner, however, can begin to understand the major criteria. These include:
1.The authenticity of collectible coins is a key factor. Be skeptical of coins that are highly valued. Unscrupulous vendors are more likely to try and counterfeit coins that are more valuable. If you arent sure whether your coin is real, research it thoroughly on the internet at coin sites or get it reviewed by an expert.
2.The condition of the coin is a major concern. Collectible coins that are in uncirculated or near-mint conditions are more valuable. There are several levels to grade the conditions of coins ranging from MS which are perfect, uncirculated coins to Basal state, which are barely recognizable as coins. MS and almost uncirculated coins are not just more attractive, they are harder to find so they are more valuable on the collectors market.
Although novelty coins and jewelry may be interesting, coins that are altered in any way will not be valuable from a collectors perspective.
3.Rare coins are more heavily valued. Like condition, this is a function of supply and demand. Rare coins, where the mint run was limited or the coins were pulled from circulation will be harder to find. In some cases, factors like release year or where the coin was minted will make it more rare, and therefore worth more.
4.The materials a coin is minted from also plays a role. Coins made of precious metals like Gold, Platinum or Silver are more valuable as coins than their melted weight because they carry value of the minting plus the metal itself.
There are several resources to learn more about the valuation of collectible coins. In addition to the resources online, you can consult guides like the Red Book to learn more about specific coins, grading by condition and how to identify if a coin is real or counterfeit.
I am often asked the question “What is my coke product worth?” or they are trying to purchase coke product collectible at a bargain and want to find out values prior to purchasing an item. I am attempting to help both the beginning collector and the advanced collector. Probably no one including the inventor of the magic elixir we all know as coke could have imagined how huge the demand for Coke products would be or how far reached it would become. Coke has become a know household name all over the world. It is a very difficult to find information and values on more modern collectibles and it can become a very frustrating process. The following are a few tips to help get you started.
1) Searching at online Auctions:
Go to any online auction such as e-bay for example and do a search for the product. Be sure to complete the search on all current auctions and an advanced search on completed past auctions in order to gather the most amount of data possible. It may take a many attempts changing keywords to hone in on the coke product you are searching for. An example keyword may be Coke Refrigerator, Coke Table Top Refrigerator, Coke Vending Machine.
If the item youre looking to sell has a date stamp make sure to add that information into your search as well: 1957 Coke Refrigerator.
If your efforts are successful it will show past auctions and the amount the item sold for. This is by no means an absolute method in determining value but it is just one component in giving your item a value range.
2) On Online Coke Product Pricing Information:
The Coke Collectors Club is a great resource that offers updated prices for recent sales of vintage Coke memorabilia in their monthly magazine as well as good articles on various topics in collecting from well-renown experts. The most popular section on the monthly magazine is “Prices Realized” with listing of current prices received for various Coke vintage products
3) Pricing Guides:
Pricing guides are great for individuals interested in starting a coke memorabilia collection, especially if you are planning on purchasing some higher priced items. The pricing guides are a great reference for what memorabilia and collectibles are out in the market place today. But be forewarned that no guide has all Coke products produced by through the years. Some guides feature a variety of items all in the same book. They usually include items such trays, calendars, refrigerators, and advertising pieces such as blotters, coupons, bottles, magazine ads, etc. Some guides target just a particular item or theme. For example the entire guide may have only bottle value in it.
